What do you do for Sunology?
I'm the marketing manager, so I'm the point person for all creative development and marketing strategy.
What do you think comes first. A tattoo idea and an artist to match or an artist you love and a tattoo to match their style?
Well, if you find an artist whose work you love, then you kind of also found a style that you love. You wouldn't, for instance, see a traditional style artist's work and think, "I love this person's work. I am going to have her do a Japanese back piece on me." Vice versa, if you have an idea about what style you want your work to be, then you should look for someone who specializes in that style. Me? I love traditional, so I go to folks who do it right. When I was younger I didn't think of it that way so I have some wonky stuff.
pearlsforyoureyes: bakeanddestroy: Wondering what I've been up...

Wondering what I've been up to lately? I recently went to work for the company that makes Sunology natural sunscreen and I could not be happier!
Sunology uses natural active ingredients - did you know that 90% of the sunscreens sold in the US use chemical active ingredients? Those chemical ingredients absorb into your skin, whereas Sunology coats the surface of your skin, scattering and reflecting the sun's harmful rays.
Additionally, Sunology contains VitaOlefera Complex - remember that stuff I mentioned that's been making my skin so amazing lately? I wear Sunology for face under my make up every day, I love it!
I know this is the time of year when everyone sunscreen shops (although you guys, I'm telling you, you should be wearing sunscreen every day. You are exposed to UV rays rain or shine, even through closed windows!) So I just wanted to tell you that I really like this product and I'm stoked to work for the company.

something from hellogiggles popped up in my timeline yesterday about posting a photo of our beauty essentials, accompanied by a shot of the most cluttered bathroom vanity i've ever seen!, & i was left with nothing but bemusement.. my "essentials" consist of soap & water & pure aloe twice a day, plus sunscreen if i'm leaving the house. natalie knows her shit; we should all be doing that!
normally i use neutrogena's ultra sheer dry-touch spf 100, because neutrogena & spf 100, but this is vegan & sounds dreamy, so i'll definitely give it a try!
Just wanted to update this with a couple of notes:
1. SPF 50 is the maximum allowed SPF under FDA 2013 Rules - I only recently became aware of this, after spending years thinking my SPF 100 was more effective than others. Turns out, there's no proof that it is.
2. The main difference between Sunology and most sunscreens available in the US is that the active ingredients are derived from nature. Most sunscreens on the market contain man-made chemicals like Oxybenzone, Avobezone, Octisalate, Homosalate which have had some pretty bad press lately. (http://foodbabe.com/2013/05/05/what-you-need-to-know-before-you-ever-buy-sunscreen-again/)
I am now a total sunscreen know-it-all so feel free to hit me up with questions!

Hey Natalie, you seem to be so open minded and smart. Could you suggest me what to respond, when someone say "You are fat. You SHOULD lose weight. If you don't, you are lazy, because loosing weight is not a big problem". They don't understand that it is a problem sometimes or a choice. And, what is worse, they don't understand, that they have no permission to interfere in other people lives. How to respond to make them feel stupid and ashamed? Suggest something harsh, please please :) Thank you.
Up until very recently, I used to get a lot of snide comments about my tattoos - mostly from older people. I made it a habit to sass them in the most horrible ways possible. I told one old lady on the bus that her opinions were invalid because she was going to die soon. (As told in this interview I did: http://oneroundjack.wordpress.com/2011/02/27/natalie-slater-bake-and-destroy/) Another time, the lady selling me my train ticket at the Metra station told me I'd regret my tattoos later in life (I was 32 at the time) and I told her it was true, I hadn't made the kind of life decisions that land you a sweet job selling train tickets at the Metra station, but I still felt pretty good about my life.
But, as I moved forward in my career, I started learning how to be graceful under fire. Being insulting and sassy is pretty fun, but being able to leave an impression as the bigger and better person is priceless. Now when someone makes a rude comment to me, I tell them I didn't mean to offend them with my personal choices, and that I hope once they get to know me they will learn to accept me. That usually shuts them up, and makes them look stupid without being insulting.
It's not exactly the same as someone making a comment about your weight - which personally I think is even more rude and uncalled for then comments about my tattoos. A good person to look to for inspiration in that department is Tess Munster. I interviewed her on my site a while ago: http://bakeanddestroy.net/2012/03/tess-is-more-an-interview-with-plus-model-tess-munster/
It's sad that there are people who have such low opinions of themselves that they feel the need to insult others. Be proud of who you are, and be even prouder that you would never make someone else feel bad about the way they live their life.
